Wonderfully Made Storytime: A Journey Through the Black Hair Experience

In honor of Black History Month, children and families are invited to a special storytime that celebrates identity, culture, and self-expression through one powerful and meaningful lens: hair.

Wonderfully Made Storytime: A Journey Through the Black Hair Experience offers children and families an engaging opportunity to learn about African American hair expression as an important part of culture, symbolism, and self-worth. Through movement, song, story, and a hands-on craft, participants will explore how hair can tell stories about heritage, creativity, and pride—while reinforcing the message that we are all wonderfully made.

Hair has long held deep cultural significance in Black history, serving as a reflection of identity, resilience, and community. This interactive storytime introduces these ideas in a joyful, age-appropriate way, encouraging curiosity, empathy, and celebration of differences. Children will be invited to move, listen, create, and express themselves while learning that everyone’s story—and style—has value and adds to the beautiful diversity we celebrate as a human race.

This special storytime will be led by Monica Jennings Woodard, a community activist who loves her heritage and is passionate about sharing Black history while cultivating connection and community. Her warm, engaging approach creates a welcoming space for families to learn together and celebrate one another.
