Self-Service Library Access FAQs

Self-service access allows eligible LCLS cardholders to enter and use the library during designated hours when staff are not present. Using secure technology provided by Bibliotheca’s Open+ system, patrons can scan their library card to unlock the building and enjoy expanded access to books, computers, Wi-Fi, and other resources—even outside of traditional staffed hours.

No. Self-service access is not a replacement for regular staffed hours or library employees. It is an addition to our current services, designed to increase access and flexibility for patrons in rural communities.

Library staff remain essential to everything we do—from helping you find your next great read to hosting programs and answering questions. Self-service hours simply allow you to use the library outside of traditional times, such as early mornings, evenings, or weekends, when staff might not be available. It’s another way we’re working to meet you where you are—on your schedule.

We want to make it easier for you to use the library when it works best for your schedule. Self-service access lets you visit the library during extended hours—even when staff aren’t present—so you can pick up books, use Wi-Fi, study, or explore your library on your own time.

We’re offering this service because:

  • We believe everyone should have more time and more ways to access their library, especially in rural communities.
  • We’re committed to removing barriers and making sure you can use library spaces even if your schedule doesn’t fit our regular staffed hours.
  • We’re excited to bring you innovative services that are both safe and easy to use—without requiring more staff or resources.

It’s your library. We just want to make it more available to you.

During self-service hours, you can enjoy many of the same services available during staffed times, including:

  • Browsing and checking out materials using self-check stations
  • Using public computers, printers, and Wi-Fi
  • Accessing study spaces, reading areas, and meeting rooms (if open)
  • Picking up holds
  • Returning items through the book drop

Please note that staff are not on-site during self-service hours, so services such as assistance with accounts, faxing, technology help, and in-person support will not be available. For help during self-service hours, you can contact the main library in Cheyenne or visit during the next staffed time.
