Self-Service Library Access Launches March 2 in Burns and Pine Bluffs

Starting Monday, March 2, Laramie County Library System is introducing Self-Service Library Access at our Burns and Pine Bluffs branches—giving eligible patrons more time to use their library on their own schedule.

Self-Service Library Access allows registered patrons to enter the library during extended hours using secure card access. During these self-service hours, staff are not on site, but patrons can browse shelves, check out materials, pick up holds, use computers and Wi-Fi, print, study, enjoy library spaces, and use meeting rooms independently. Staffed service hours remain unchanged.

For many residents in Burns and Pine Bluffs, work schedules, school, or commuting make it difficult to visit during traditional staffed hours. This new option expands access so more people can use the library when it fits their lives and helps ensure that core library services remain available during unexpected staffing challenges, when branches might previously have needed to close.

Self-Service Library Access is part of LCLS’ Rural Services Expansion Project and was funded through a Wyoming State Library grant. LCLS is the first library system in Wyoming to offer self-service library access and the first rural library in the nation to implement this technology outside of an urban setting. Bringing this innovation to Burns and Pine Bluffs is an important step toward ensuring consistent, reliable library access across Laramie County.

For our small branch teams, this approach also creates more opportunity to build partnerships and connect with schools, organizations, and residents in the community while still making sure the library remains open and available to patrons.

What You Can Do During Self-Service Hours

  • Browse and check out materials
  • Pick up holds
  • Use public computers, printing, and Wi-Fi
  • Study, read, or work quietly
  • Use meeting rooms outside staffed hours

Self-Service Library Access is an addition—not a replacement—for traditional staffed hours. Library staff will continue providing expert help, programs, and personal assistance during regular hours.
