One Book, One Laramie County
Reading Becomes Community.
One Book, One Laramie County is a community-wide reading initiative that invites people of all backgrounds to read, reflect on, and discuss the same book. By sharing a common story, we create space for connection, curiosity, and conversation—across generations, perspectives, and experiences.
At its heart, this community reads program is about finding common ground through literature. A thoughtfully selected book anchors programs, discussions, and creative opportunities that encourage us to think deeply, listen closely, and engage with one another in meaningful ways.
How One book, one laramie county works
Community reads brings people together through a shared reading experience:
- One shared book serves as a starting point for conversation and exploration
- Community connection grows as readers across ages and backgrounds engage with the same story
- Theme-driven selections invite reflection on timely, meaningful topics
- Programs and events expand the conversation through an author talk
- All are welcome—whether you read every page, listen to the audiobook, or join a single event
Participation looks different for everyone. Read on your own, discuss with friends or family, attend a program, or simply pass the book along to the next reader.

2026 one book, one laramie county selection
This year’s selection aligns with Laramie County Library System’s broader semiquincentennial reflection on the stories that shape who we are—past, present, and future—while reinforcing a lasting commitment to bringing our community together through shared reading, thoughtful dialogue, and the power of story.
The Bear by Andrew Krivak
A former National Endowment for the Arts Big Read selection, The Bear is a lyrical, haunting novel about human fragility, resilience, and our relationship with the natural world.
Set in an imagined future, the story follows a girl raised by her father in deep harmony with the land. With only a few remnants of civilization left behind, he teaches her how to listen—to the seasons, the stars, and the living world around her. When she must navigate the wilderness alone, an unexpected guide leads her toward survival, understanding, and belonging.
The Bear invites readers to slow down, reflect, and consider what endures when much has been stripped away making it a powerful foundation for shared discussion and interpretation.
