Aloha Rodeo: A Hidden History of the American West

Discover the remarkable true story behind Aloha Rodeo at a special one-night-only author event at the Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum.
On Wednesday, May 7, from 5:30 to 7:00 pm, Laramie County Library System and the Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum will host David Wolman and Julian Smith, co-authors of Aloha Rodeo: Three Hawaiian Cowboys, the World’s Greatest Rodeo, and a Hidden History of the American West, for an evening of storytelling and history.
Through Aloha Rodeo, Wolman and Smith uncover the remarkable true story of three Hawaiian cowboys who traveled across the Pacific to compete in Cheyenne, changing the narrative of the American West. Their journey is one of determination, cultural exchange, and an unexpected connection that still resonates today, offering a new perspective on the origins of cowboy culture and the stories that shaped it.
During the event, Wolman and Smith will share insights from their research and writing, followed by an opportunity for audience questions and a book signing. Copies of Aloha Rodeo will be available for purchase, with time to meet the authors and have your book signed.
The evening is presented in conjunction with Aloha Vaqueros, an international traveling exhibit now on display through September 13 at the museum. Through artifacts, photographs, and storytelling, the exhibit weaves together the vibrant traditions of Hawaiian Paniolos, Mexican Vaqueros, and American Western Cowboy, revealing how these cultures shaped the ranching and rodeo heritage of the American West. Attendees of the author event will have the opportunity to explore the exhibit during the event, deepening the connection between the story on the page and the history on display.
Whether you are drawn to Western history, compelling storytelling, or discovering something new, this event offers a rare opportunity to experience a story that is both global in scope and deeply rooted in Cheyenne.
This is a one-night-only event. An RSVP is encouraged to help the museum plan but is not required.
