This month, we will be streaming Black, Brown, & Beige & The Best of Basie. Two of music’s most legendary names are the bandleaders Duke Ellington and Count Basie. In this show, we highlight some of their most extraordinary repertoire. We delve into the beloved swinging classics of Count Basie’s bands, and then move into Duke Ellington’s magnum opus: Black, Brown, & Beige, a concert work that challenged America’s notions of what Jazz composition could be and what it could represent. Discussion afterward led by UW professor Ben Markley DMA, Director of Jazz Studies.
